My congregation, Bentleigh Progressive Synagogue, has been hearing from me about my
connection to you all.  I have extended a welcome to anyone visiting Melbourne to let us know
in advance, should hosting be needed.
I look forward to developing a continuing relationship with HHC and hope it will be helpful and
harmonious to us all.

The UPJ Biennial Conference
After 9 long months of planning, the UPJ convention finally arrived in Hobart.  Some 80
delegates from all over Australia, New Zealand, and Hong Kong and even as far away as South
Africa turned up on our shores.  We had many Rabbis, including the consulting Rabbi for our
own shul Rabbi Aviva Kipen.  The convention, which was held at The Old Woolstore, began on
Thursday afternoon, followed by dinner on Thursday evening which was attended by most of
the board.  Will Howard gave us all a very interesting talk on climate change and all who were
present thoroughly enjoyed it.
On Friday the workshops continued in the Woolstore all day, with a few of our own members
attending.  Friday night we all attended shul and what a Shabbat service we had! We certainly
were not short of a rabbi to take the service.  In fact we had Rabbi Black and Cantor Bently both
from Melbourne spoil us, as well as a full house.  After the service we walked back to the
Woolstore, where we all had dinner during which presentations were made to those involved in
organising the conference.  Rabbi Robuck and his choir from Temple in Chatswood also
entertained us with beautiful Jewish music and dancing.
Saturday morning not only did we have more Rabbis in shul but we also had an electronic piano
plus choir and plenty of people.  Rabbi Robuck and Cantor Bently with Aviva Kipen and Rabbi
Morgan took the service and of course the choir sang and the shul sounded fantastic.  This was
followed by Kiddush.  The workshops continued after lunch and then, for the highlight of the
convention, we all went on a dinner cruise on the Cartela.  Rabbi Robuck, with the help from of
the Netzer group, helped to see the Shabbat out by having Havdalah on the boat, followed by
dinner and of course more singing with the choir and the singing Rabbi plus piano.
On Sunday there were more workshops during the morning.  The convention came to an end on
Sunday lunchtime, with most people flying home.  The Rabbis, however, did stay on for another
3 days, finishing on Wednesday.  All in all it was a very successful convention.
