During one of his frequent overseas trips
Mr H J Jacob stopped in Calcutta and was
invited by Lady Rachel Ezra for Friday
night Shabbat dinner. Lady Ezra took him
round the Synagogue and showed him many of
the beautiful scrolls they had. Mr Jacob
told her about our small Community in Hobart
and that an additional scroll would be very
welcome. Lady Ezra agreed to make a scroll
available.
The scroll arrived safely in Hobart (all
expenses generously borne by Lady Ezra)
and the consecration was held on Sunday
November 18th, 1951. Ever since, the
Torah scroll from India has created great
interest. It is in an ornamental silver
casing in the Sephardi style, which is
quite different to the scrolls usually
seen in an Ashkenazi Synagogue. Only at
very special occasions is it used in the
service, but it is often shown with pride!
