MINUTES OF Meeting, held 17th, June, 1952 at the Board Room of the Synagogue.

Messrs. H.J. Jacob (chairman) Chase, C. Epstein, E. Jacob, Newman, Popper and by spy the ecial invitation Mr. Lippman from Melbourne, Mrs. Fixel

Minutes of meeting held 9th Jan 1952 were read and confirmed as a true record.

The president reported that this congregation had been honoured by the visit of the Chief Rabbi, the very Rev. Israel Brodie, accompanied by Mrs. Brodie.  The visitors arrived in Hobart on Wednesday, 30th April and were met on the airport by the President of the Congregation and Mrs. Jacob, and by representatives of the Congregation.  Rabbi Brodie was received on behalf of the Government of Tasmania by the Deputy Premier, as the Premier was absent from Hobart.  Rabbi and Mrs. Brodie, together with Rev. Ruben were entertained by the Governor Sir Ronald Cross and Lady Cross for Lunch.  In the afternoon a Civic Reception was held by the Lord Mayor Mr. Park, and a very friendly and cordial atmosphere prevailed.

At 8.pm a special service was held at the Synagogue which was very well attended.  The service was followed by a reception at Wrest Point, in the course of which Rabbi Brodie as well as Mrs. Brodie gave short talks and expressed their satisfaction to see the Jewish spirit was kept alive in this small community.

It is to be put on record how very helpful the authorities were in making the visit of the Chief Rabbi a success, and the Tasmanian Government placed a car at the disposition of Rabbi Brodie.

On Thursday, 1st May the party proceeded to Launceston and returned to the Mainland in the afternoon.  Mr. R. Ellinson and Miss T. Kingsley accompanied the Chief Rabbi during his Tasmanian Trip.

Mr. Lipppman, who had acted as Tasmanian Representative at the recent annual Conference of the E.C.A.J. gave a short report of the proceedings.  For the next 2 years the headquarters of the E.C.A.J. will be in Sydney, Mr. Einfeld being the President.  Subsidy: during the last three years only part of the promised subsidy had been received, and all the funds had been provided by the Congregational Committee of Victoria.  In this connection Mr. Einfeld expressed the view that his State will not oppose the resolution to continue with the subsidy for another three years, but the Board of Deputies in N.S.W. has no constitutional authority over the Congregational Committee and cannot bring pressure to bear so that N.S.W. may contribute to the subsidy.   It is the view of the may people in Sydney that there are enough Jews in Hobart to pay the whole salary of the minister.

Mr. Lippman promised to supply a list of all the Congregations who had in the past contributed to the subsidy and suggests that the President of each congregation with assisting Hobart.  Mr. R. Ellinson who had seen conditions in Hobart when accompanying the Chief Rabbi, is Chairman of Cngr Ctee in Victoria and Mr. David Benjamin Chairman of the N.S.W. Cngr. Committee.

A vote of thanks was passed to Mr. Lippman for his efforts on behalf of Hobart.
