Why join Hobart Synagogue?

Because we need you and because you’ll make a difference.

Your membership of our congregation will keep the oldest synagogue in Australia, that has been holding services continuously since 1845, proudly continue its traditions.  Your membership will help us grow and develop into the future.  Your membership will help ensure all Tasmanian Jews have a spiritual, community and educational home.

Membership fees enable us to:

  • Celebrate events that bring Jews of Tasmania together—major holidays, Shabbat dinners, family simchas, and social gatherings.
  • Bring Rabbis from various Jewish traditions to help us celebrate major Jewish holidays and to provide education programs.
  • Maintain our heritage-listed historic synagogue.
  • Provide subsidies for attendance at mainland Jewish youth group camps and participation in other Jewish educational opportunities for children.
  • Allow us to continue our memberships with Australian Jewish organisations.

Who can join?

Any Tasmanian resident who is either halachically Jewish or has been converted to Judaism through a Beth Din constituted by a recognised rabbinical authority (Orthodox, Masorti, or Progressive) is eligible to apply.

Applications for membership are considered by the board of the congregation, usually at its first monthly meeting after being received.

Upon approval, new members are sent a welcome letter and shortly afterwards a Seat Hire (membership fee) notice. The level of fees is decided at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the congregation, normally held in August or early September, and is currently (2018-19) $300 for a family over a full year with appropriate reductions for singles and students.

Launceston Synagogue

Launceston Synagogue

Northern Tasmania

We have a number of members living in the northern part of Tasmania and have appointed a Northern Coordinator to represent their interests and reach out to them. Activities are based in Launceston around the historic local synagogue (established in 1846, one year after Hobart) and include occasional Progressive services run by a lay leader.

Northern members are more than welcome to attend services and events in Hobart whenever convenient, receive all standard membership benefits, and have full voting rights at AGMs.
