The Hobart Hebrew Congregation warmly welcomes applications for membership. As a small community it gives us great pleasure whenever newcomers join us, and we encourage their involvement in all facets of shul life.
Anyone resident in Tasmania who is either halachically Jewish or has been converted to Judaism through a Beth Din constituted by a recognised rabbinical authority (Orthodox, Masorti, or Progressive) is eligible to apply.
Applications for membership are considered by the Board of the congregation, usually at its first monthly meeting after being received.
Upon approval, new members are sent a welcome letter and shortly afterwards a Seat Hire (membership fee) notice. The level of fees is decided at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the congregation, normally held in August or early September, and is currently (2018-19) $300 for a family over a full year with appropriate reductions for singles and students.
If you want to find out more about how to become a member of our congregation, or any other aspect of membership, please don’t hesitate to email our Membership Officer. She will be very happy to assist.
Ready to apply for membership straight away? Then, you can complete an online application for membership.
We have a number of members living in the northern part of Tasmania and have appointed a Northern Coordinator to represent their interests and reach out to them. Activities are based in Launceston around the historic local synagogue (established in 1846, one year after Hobart) and include occasional Progressive services run by a lay leader.
Northern members are more than welcome to attend services and events in Hobart whenever convenient, receive all standard membership benefits, and have full voting rights at AGMs.
