Who can join?
Any Tasmanian resident who is either halachically Jewish or has been converted to Judaism through a Beth Din constituted by a recognised rabbinical authority (Orthodox, Masorti, or Progressive) is eligible to apply.
Applications for membership are considered by the board of the congregation, usually at its first monthly meeting after being received.
Upon approval, new members are sent a welcome letter and shortly afterwards a Seat Hire (membership fee) notice. The level of fees is decided at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the congregation, normally held in August or early September, and is currently (2019-20) $340 for a family over a full year with appropriate reductions for individuals ($190) and students ($45).
Benefits to Members
We have a number of members living in the northern part of Tasmania and have appointed a Northern Coordinator to represent their interests and reach out to them. Activities are based in Launceston around the historic local synagogue (established in 1846, one year after Hobart) and include occasional Progressive services run by a lay leader.
Northern members are more than welcome to attend services and events in Hobart whenever convenient, receive all standard membership benefits, and have full voting rights at AGMs.
