Memberships enable us to:

• celebrate events that bring Jews of Tasmania together – major holidays, Shabbat dinners, family simchas, and social gatherings
• bring Rabbis from various Jewish traditions to help us celebrate major Jewish holidays and to provide education programs
• provide Jewish educational opportunities for children
• maintain our heritage-listed historic synagogue.

Who can join?

Any Tasmanian resident who is either halachically Jewish or has been converted to Judaism through a Beth Din constituted by a recognised rabbinical authority (Orthodox, Masorti or Progressive) is eligible to apply. In certain circumstances, special exceptions may apply.  Please contact us for more information.

Upon approval, new members are sent a welcome letter and shortly afterwards a membership fee notice. The level of fees is decided at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the congregation.

Memberships fees

Currently, we are employing a “voluntary dues” model, which essentially lets members decide how much to pay for their membership.  There is a minimum $5.00 payment, and also a suggested “sustaining level” contribution.   There are frequently asked questions about the voluntary dues model.

• the opportunity to take on leadership roles within a small community; several of our members lead services, serve on the board, and contribute to congregation initiatives
• free use of the shul for lifecycle events
• priority invitations to official ceremonies involving the Jewish community
• discounted prices for concerts or other public events organised through the shul
• discounted prices for congregational activities where a charge is levied to recover costs, such as the annual communal Seder
• the right to attend, vote and stand for Board positions at AGMs.
